How To Choose The Right Fire For Your Home

Is it safe to mount a tv above a fireplace?

We get asked this a LOT. ‘Is it safe to mount a TV above my fireplace?’

If you are thinking of putting your TV above a fireplace (because let’s face it, lots of people do, and you get to look at both of your favourite focal points in one go!) here is everything you need to know:

Heat Damage: Fireplaces generate significant heat, especially when in use. Placing a TV above a fireplace exposes it to high temperatures, which can lead to heat damage over time. Excessive heat can affect the internal components of the TV, causing performance issues, screen discolouration, and even permanent damage.

Poor Ventilation: Proper ventilation is crucial for electronic devices to prevent overheating and ensure optimal performance. Mounting a TV above a fireplace can restrict airflow around the TV, leading to overheating and decreased lifespan. Without adequate ventilation, the TV's internal components may be at risk of damage or malfunction.

Installation Issues: Improper installation of a TV above a fireplace can exacerbate safety risks. Mounting brackets, cables, and wiring must be securely attached and properly insulated to prevent accidents. Additionally, the weight-bearing capacity of the wall and the stability of the mounting structure must be carefully evaluated to avoid potential hazards.

Obviously, we know what you are all going to say; ‘So if we have a gas or electric fire it’s fine to mount a TV above a fireplace?’ I’m afraid in the case of gas in particular, this is still the case – particularly if you have opted for a glass-fronted large log effect gas fire.
